We have passed the darkest night of Winter Solstice and tonight we celebrate the end of a dark year. What remains? What opens for us?
I learned that Hebrew does not have a word corresponding to “history” in English. The word “zechira” in Hebrew means memory or remembrance. This distinction resonates deeply for me in my work around my family’s ties to Hiroshima and its memories. Remembrance is an active process not an inert past.
In fact, history is never just what happened in the past; it was someone remembered and preserved and recounted about past events. What we chose to remember and retell is about what we value.
What do you value? What will you take with you from this year to inform the future?
